In the panic and chaos of the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting, a man earned instant infamy as he left his wounded fiancée and children in the theater and drove off without them.

It all started when father Jamie Rohrs says they arrived a little late and originally planned to sit where James Eagan Holmes entered. Instead, they opted for a second floor balcony. When the shooting started, Rohrs said he was holding his infant, Ethan, and started running and dodging other panicked theater goers. He originally thought about playing dead by lying on the ground with his baby, but little Ethan was crying and Rohrs told ABC News, "He's crying and they're going to come get me."

Rohrs believed that there was more than one shooter at first, which is quite understandable. Holmes used .233 semiautomatic rifle, two 40 caliber Glocks, and a Remington 870 shotgun in the mass attack. All four guns were purchased legally at Bass Pro Shop Gander Mountain, both national chain sporting goods stores.

Rohrs said he became disoriented after putting his baby down and after running around the theater, couldn't find his child again. Instead of going back and looking for him, the man continued to run outside. He didn't stop there, though. In his highly panicked stated, he hopped in his car and drove off.

Meanwhile, his fiancée Patricia Legarreta had a shrapnel injury from her thigh to her ankle. She was lying on the floor when she saw her baby. She picked him up, grabbed her daughter, Azeria's hand, and ran as fast as she could out of the theater. 4-year-old Azeria had been asleep when the shooting started.

Rohrs apparently felt remorse and a bit of self-loathing when he realized he was alone in the car and Legarreta called him from someone else's phone to find out where he was. He turned back, reuniting with his family before all were taken to the hospital and later released.

For Rohrs to go public and tell the world that he essentially abandoned his family in a deadly theater shooting shows surprising lack of self-awareness and accountability. Sure, he felt bad about leaving his fiancée and children to fend for themselves, but what kind of parent thinks of himself before thinking of his child? What kind of a man pulls a George Costanza by running away instead of making sure his family is safe?

(AURORA, Colo.) -- A young Colorado mother who survived the mass shooting at a movie theater Friday became engaged to her boyfriend hours after the incident, which left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

"I'm ecstatic, extremely excited, but at the same time, you have this tragedy, this sadness hanging over," Patricia Legarreta told Good Morning America.

Patricia Legarreta was attending the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises at the mall in Aurora, Colo., with her fiancé, her 4-year-old daughter and infant son when suspected gunman James Holmes opened fire on the packed movie theater.

The young mother was hit and was taken to the hospital for treatment, where her boyfriend Jamie Rohrs proposed.

"I'm ecstatic, extremely excited, but at the same time, you have this tragedy, this sadness hanging over," Legarreta told Good Morning America.

When Holmes, 24, allegedly unloaded four weapons' full of ammunition into an unsuspecting crowd, sheer chaos erupted as people scrambled for the exits.

Legarreta said her daughter fell in the process of trying to flee because she had fallen asleep during the movie and was disoriented. Legarreta said she attempted to shield her young daughter from the spray of bullets.

"Just blocking her, just shoving her, just making sure she's not getting hurt, just trying to keep her down," Legarreta said, through tears. "Just trying to keep calm so she didn't start freaking out even more. It was just so scary."

Legarreta said she doesn't really remember what happened but credits 19-year-old Jarell Brooks with saving her and her two young children. Legarreta and Brooks were reunited for the first time since the shooting on Good Morning America.

"I don't know where I would be," Legarreta said. "I don't remember exactly everything that happened but I thank him because having him there next to me, knowing that there was somebody there, just, it's comforting, knowing that somebody was willing to help."

Brooks said he was sitting six rows from the back when Holmes, appeared in front of the movie screen and started shooting.

"The only reason I saw him was from the flashes of the gunshots," Brooks said. "My life definitely flashed before my eyes in that moment."

While trying to get out of the theater, Brooks saw a woman, later identified as Legarreta, struggling to get herself and her two children out.

He said he crawled on top of Legarreta in an attempt to push her and the kids out the door. But in the process, Brooks was shot in the thigh.

"It felt like a sharp pain," he said. "When I tried to move my left leg, I went down. I looked at my hand and I noticed there was bleeding. That's when I knew it was real."

"I remember hearing him scream and saying 'oh god' when he got hit," Legarreta said.

Brooks said he was just doing what he thought was best in the situation and doesn't consider himself a hero.

"I saw someone in distress," he said. "I'm not the kind of person who would let them be in that situation and me selfishly trying to get myself out of the equation... all she's trying to do is protect her kids, so I felt like if I could get her out, then maybe, I would have gotten out maybe I wouldn't, as long as I knew she was OK I was alright."

Yeah... I agree with Jarell. Jamie Rohrs is a fucking pathetic coward. What the FUCK kind of man abandons their girlfriend and children to die in a theater where everybody's getting shot up by some sick terrorist bastard? Piece of shit only cared about saving his own ass, that's all.  It's just heartbreaking to know that some random stranger cared more about the safety of Patricia and her kids than Jamie himself did. Even more depressing is the fact that Patricia actually ACCEPTED Jamie's marriage proposal after he left her and their kids to die like that.

Jamie Rohrs doesn't deserve a wife and kids. He doesn't deserve ANYTHING, but to be forced to live out the rest of his pathetic, miserable existence wracked with the overbearing shame and guilt of knowing that he's a dirty, filthy, slimy, pathetic, contemptible, disgusting, selfish little coward who left his own girlfriend and, even worse, HIS OWN CHILDREN, to die in that theater in Aurora, Colorado, during the early morning hours of Friday, July 19th, 2012. That is ALL he deserves. Nothing more.
