At least five innocent bystanders shot at by LAPD officers after being mistaken for Chris Dorner

Here is everything you need to know on day two of the multi-state and now multi-nation search for 33-year-old Chris Dorner, the LAPD’s ex-cop turned cop killer.

Police Shoot At Innocent People, Sending One Elderly Woman to ICU

At least five innocent people have been shot at by police in southern California after being mistaken for Chris Dorner, the 33-year-old former LAPD police officer who has killed at least three people in his shooting rampage against the police department that fired him.

All of the wrongful shootings took place in the same neighborhood in Torrence, California, where a patrol unit was stationed to guard the home of a high-ranking LAPD officer they feared Dorner might target.

Two of the victims were women delivering newspapers in a pick-up truck that resembled ex-cop Chris Dorner’s who say they were given zero warning before officer’s opened fire, reports CBS Los Angeles. One neighbor told the Daily Breeze that he heard as many as 20 shots.

Police Chief Charlie Beck told the media that the women’s pick-up truck matched the description of Dorner’s dark-colored Nissan, calling it “a case of mistaken identity by the officers,” even though the women’s royal blue Toyota Tacoma is a different color and make.

Their lawyer, Glen Jonas, countered the Cheif’s claims, arguing, “The vehicle is a different color. The license plate doesn’t match. There’s nothing there for you to start shooting people. And even if they had the person in question… Mr. Dorner…you still have to give them an opportunity to get out. You can’t just start administering street justice.

The women, identified as Maggie Carranza, 47, and her 71-year-old mother, Emma Hernandez, were taken to the hospital. Caranza was treated for wounds to the hand from shattered glass and Hernandez, who was struck with a bullet in the back, remains in the ICU at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where she’s listed in good condition.

The other three innocent victims shot at by police did not sustain any wounds.

Manhunt Prompts Lockdowns; Search Expands to 3 states and Mexico;

Over 100 police officers from various agencies continued their search of Chris Dorner in Big Bear Lake area of the San Bernardino Mountains after his pick-up truck was found burned and abandoned yesterday. They went door to door, searching dozens of homes in Big Bear but found nothing, so they’ve moved the search farther into the mountains despite a snowstorm.

Much of the Big Bear region is on lockdown as the search continues, including schools, though most ski resorts remained open.

Meanwhile, authorities have expanded the search to all of California, Nevada, Arizona and northern Mexico, reports the AP.

Chris Dorner Sends Creepy Package to CNN

Yesterday it was reported that CNN’s Anderson Cooper received a package from Dorner. Cooper says the package arrived on February 1, but he didn’t find out about it until yesterday.
Cooper said the package contained a bullet-riddled coin that was wrapped in duct tape.
The tape had a handwritten message that said, “Thanks, but no thanks Will Bratton,” referring to former Los Angeles police chief William Bratton. The coin is typically handed out by the police chief as a memento.
The package also had a hand-labeled DVD and a note that read, in part, ‘I never lied.’ According to the LAPD, Dorner was fired because he lied about an incident back in 2007 when he was a rookie cop working alongside a training officer.
Anderson Cooper was one of several media personalities that received a shout out from Dorner in his online manifesto.

Authorities Are Spooked

The police are freaking out, and rightly so. Nearly all of Chris Dorner’s manifesto declares his desire to end the lives of those officers he feels wronged him.

He’s highly skilled and has had four years to plan this so there’s no telling where he is or what he’s capable of. All the police know is what he’s armed with (he detailed his stockpile of firearms in his manifesto) and his military record, which is even more unsettling, especially since he declared, “I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in L.A.P.D. uniform whether on or off duty,” in his manifesto. “I will utilize every bit of small arms training, demolition, ordinance and survival training I’ve been given.”

Dorner’s military records show that he earned a marksman ribbon and pistol expert medal as a navy reservist, reports the New York Times. Furthermore, “He was assigned to a naval undersea warfare unit and various aviation training units, taking a leave from the LAPD to be deployed to Bahrain in 2006 and 2007.”

This isn’t lost on LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, who said, “[Dorner] knows what he’s doing; we trained him. He was also a member of the armed forces. It is extremely worrisome and scary, especially to the police officers involved.”

That’s why police are coming out in full force.

“The nearly 10,000-member LAPD dispatched officers to protect more than 40 potential targets, including police officers and their families. The department also pulled officers from motorcycle duty, fearing they would make for easy targets,” reports the AP.
